This study focused on the age, growth and mortality of snook, Centropomus undecimalis, collected from sportfishermen in ENP from May 1976 through December 1979. Three hundred twenty-five fish ranged in length from 284-940 mm FL and in weight from 0.7 - 11.6 kg. Mean lengths of fish were largest in spring and smallest in winter. Show moreThis study focused on the age, growth and mortality of snook, Centropomus undecimalis, collected from sportfishermen in ENP from May 1976 through December 1979. Three hundred twenty-five fish ranged in length from 284-940 mm FL and in weight from 0.7 - 11.6 kg. Mean lengths of fish were largest in spring and smallest in winter. There were no differences in mean length among areas of capture. Annulus formation occurred in spring (March-May). Ages of fish were mainly 4-5 year-olds. Recruitment to the fishery began at age 2 and was completed at age 6., The overall sex ratio favored males 3/1 and there were no differences in mean age of fish among areas of capture. Mean calculated growth of all snook was 375 mm FL in the first year and 57-90 mm thereafter. Calculated fish lengths at age differed among areas of capture and sexual differences in length-weight relationship were noted. Annual mortality rate of all fully recruited fish was 78%. Sexual differences in mortality rates were discussed.

Previous methods used to monitor precipitation in this region were reviewed. The authors compared data collected biweekly during a 22 month period (December 1977- September 1979) among rain gauge networks containing 87, 29, 11 and 3 gauges. These results were also compared with data collected daily at three long-term NOAA stations located on the periphery of the study area. A comparison between managed surface water inflows and uncontrolled precipitation contributions to the slough during this time was also made. Data from the three long-term NOAA stations were further used to compute a reconstruction of direct rainfall inputs into the slough on a monthly and yearly basis for the period 1952 to 1979.

The hydrologic parameters examined for Water Year 78 include: precipitation, temperature, water level, water deliveries, and discharge. These data are summarized both graphically and in tabular formats to provide greater insight into hydrologic conditions during Water Year 78.

Relative abundance, proportion of females, and number of juveniles were highest in Everglades National Park from Lostman's River northward. Juveniles were never found at most stations sampled in Florida Bay. The primary source of adult crabs in Florida Bay appears to be from the Gulf of Mexico., Spatial and temporal variations in the distribution, abundance, size class frequency, sex ratio, and reproductive activity of stone crabs Menippe mercenaria was studied in south Florida coastal waters and existing knowledge of the species was synthesized. Abundance of juveniles and adults was highest and mean size was smallest from Lostman 's River northward. Abundance decreased and mean size increased with movement southward through Florida Bay. Juvenile distribution and abundance was directly related to abundance of adults and proportion of females in the trapped population. BNP resembled Florida Bay in number and size of adults and lack of juveniles., Temporal changes in abundance, sex ratio and size class frequency of adults were correlated to reproductive activity and water temperature and corresponded to commerical fishing season offshore, and in Florida Bay. Females bear eggs in summer and become sexually mature by age three. Molting occurs from fall through spring in females, increase in CW by 10 mm with each molt and can live to age seven. Males may molt year-round with a mean molt increment of 16 mm CW for crabs greater than 70 mm CW. Discriminant function analyses of data from randomly sampled sites was used to identify environmental characteristics important to juvenile spotted seatrout and gray snapper habitat.

The Everglades National Park is located at the southern tip of the peninsula. The ecosystem of the Park is dependent for its survival upon high quality water of sufficient quantity flowing from the north and timed to correspond to the life cycles and processes of the biota of the region., The problems resulting from the dependence of the Park upon the natural flow of high quality water from the north may be instructively analyzed as a case study of the more general and often less dramatically and palpably evident relationship between man's activities and the natural environment. These considerations led the Environmental Study Group of the National Academy of Sciences and National Academny of Engineering to examine these problems. The study concentrates on the law relating to the water rights of the Park.

Traditional fire history information (Arno and Sneck, 1977) is less available for south Florida than for other areas within the U.S. because burned areas revegetate rapidly, and fire scarred trees either do not have annual rings or else the ings are difficult to interpret (Taylor, in press.) Good fire records are extremely important as they represent almost the only valid data on fire history. Even so, Robertson (1953) states south Florida is perhaps unique in that it has had more fires and kept less account of them than any other section of the country., The purpose of this report is to review fire history and actions that led to current fire management alternatives, to organize and tabulate fire records from 1948 through 1979 drawn together from scattered sources, and to review changes in causes of fires that have occurred during the 32-year period of record. (Fire history for years prior to establishment of Everglades as a park are reviewed by Robertson (1953) and are included in this report as Appendix III). Objectives of current fire management activities are reviewed. Everglades National Park files have been searched for letters, memorandums, and reports that deal with fire history within the park. All individual fire reports that could be located have been placed in a permanent file in the Resources Management office at Pine Island near park headquarters., Fire records showed cause of fire to be from lightning, by man, or from prescribed fire. Man-caused fires included unauthorized fires set by man or by activities of man such as farming operations, hunting and lumbering. Lightning fires include any ignition known to have resulted from a lightning strike. Prescribed fires are those fires set by managers for a specified purpose. Wildfire, as used in the records and in this report, indicates any man-caused or lightning-caused fire that was not a prescribed fire.

Everglades National Park is at the southern periphery of an extensive hydrologic system that furnishes water to southern Florida. The park encompasses about 1.5 million acres and extends southward some 50 miles from the Tamiami Canal to Florida Bay (fig. 1). Show moreEverglades National Park is at the southern periphery of an extensive hydrologic system that furnishes water to southern Florida. The park encompasses about 1.5 million acres and extends southward some 50 miles from the Tamiami Canal to Florida Bay (fig. 1). The fresh-water portion of the Everglades is commonly considered a swamp; more properly it is a broad, shallow, slowly moving river-- poetically the "river of grass". Sluggish overland flow of the river results from low relief, a land slope of only 6 feet in the 50 miles from north to south.

Show moreThe report documents the results of hydrologic investigations conducted by the National Park Service, evaluating the impacts of 1984 through 1986 L-31W canal drawdown operations on the water resources of the northern Taylor Slough Basin of Everglades National Park. Drawdown impacts on the hydrologic conditions in the central and northern portions of the Taylor Slough Basin were not investigated. The 1984 drawdown period began on the morning of October 15. Control structure S-175 remained open for seven days to stabilize L-31W canal stages at the required 3.50 feet. The overall results of the study indicate that management of wet season stages below 4.50 feet in the upper portion of the L-31W canal causes drainage of the adjacent Taylor Slough wetlands.
