The Snyder Outdoor School for Boys was established on Captiva in 1914 and existed through most of the 1920s. Emphasis at the exclusive boarding school was on the classics and on outdoor experiences. Trips were made via their sailing vessel, crewed by the boys.

The Runboat Ray was sailing vessel that carried ice to fish houses up and down the coast from Punta Gorda to the Ten Thousand Islands. Runboats would pick up iced fish on their return run and rail cars would be filled with the shipped mullet and other fish.
