Summary:: The problem of this study is to appraise the reading program of the Elementary Schools of Madison County, and was made on the basis of (1) observation of the schools and (2) the fact that 113 pupils were failed because of the inability to read. Interviews with the teachers of the twenty elementary schools in Madison County led the investigator to conclude that the reading program needed appraising. The investigator was led further to believe that the present reading program did not include all plans in arrangement in the schools system which affects the development of children in reading. If this be true it seems to warrant an appraisal to determine the status of the present reading program.
