Abstract/Description:
Reviews the role of freshwater in estuaries, covering such topics as the dilution of salt water, the protection of fry, shrimp, and oysters, and other biota, water temperature modification, osmoregulation of marine animals, the transportation of primary nutrients and metabolic waste removal, the moderation of concentration-dependent reactions and salt water, water's role as a resource-partitioning mechanism in coastal waters, the vertical movement and distribution of organisms, water as a cutting and filling mechanism, the maintenance of a "salt wedge" and mixing zone, the delivery of allochthonous materials to estuaries as a function of precipitation, drainage, and topography, its effect on migratory species, its effect on organisms which are a nuisance to man, the quantity and quality of freshwater needed to maintain an estuarine productiveness, observations on the role of freshwater in estuaries as related to coastal zone development and demand for freshwater, and other aspects. An extensive bibliography is appended. The bibliography provides information on scientific literature related to estuaries in the form of books, government documents, gray literature, journal articles, conference proceedings, and more. References in the bibliography range from the turn of the 20th-century through the mid-1970s.
