Scope and content:
The earliest visitors, almost without exception, saw only the coastal areas. The interior is not explored and mapped until the Second and Third Seminole Wars, 1835-1842 and 1855-1858. These accounts receive no general circulation at the time and the region reamined as remote and unknown as ever for another quarter of a century. Though the Indian had been removed as an obstacle to settlement, whites moved in slowly and in 1900 only eight percent of the state's one half million people lived in South Florida.
