The study provides baseline data on the nature and recent successional history (since 1940) of tropical hardwood hammocks in the "East" Everglades. Tropical hardwood hammocks, small islands of tropical hardwood forest surrounded by other vegetation types, occur in the U.S. only in South Florida. In the past few years, many hammocks within the study area have been severly affected by fire. One hundred hammocks were selected for study and identified by quadrant.
