Summary:
In 1973 the Endangered Species Act mandated by legislation that "all Federal departments and agencies shall seek to conserve endangered species and threatened species and shall utilize their authorities in furtherance of the purposes of this chapter" (16 USC 1531-1543). In compliance with this mandate, the Everglades National Park and the Big Cypress National Preserve allocated funding to assess the current status, number, and distribution or the Florida Panther within the boundaries of the Federally owned park areas of south Florida. A contract to conduct this survey was issued in April 1984 to Rancher's Supply, Inc. of Alpine, Texas. Principal investigator for Rancher's Supply,Inc. was Roy McBride.
