Summary:
In his class description of the fishes of Florida and adjacent waters, Briggs (1958) enumerated 1,120 species; of these only some 88 were known to habitually occupy the fresh waters of the State. Only 44 of Florida's native freshwater fish species are present from the Okeechobee Waterway southward. Principally within the past decade, and perhaps even earlier, this depauperate fauna has been artificially augmented through the introduction of at least 16 species of exotic fishes, to bring the total number of essentially freshwater species to 60. Table 1 lists the native species by their families and their common and scientific names.
