Drawing upon information from the present studies of the comparative and functional morphology, distribution and ecology of Xiphophorus and those made during the last quarter of a century on their genetics, cytology, embriology, endocrinology and ethiology, the species are arranged and classified in a manner that is believed indicative of their phylogenic relationships.
