The report is the result of an extensive ground-water quality sampling, data analysis, and interpretation effort by the Ambient Ground-Water Quality Monitoring Program at the SWFWMD. It includes information on stratigraphy, structure, hydrostratigraphy, potentiometric surface, aquifer recharge, aquifer use, and ground-water quality. The ground-water quality chapter includes regional maps of the concentrations for 26 of the chemical parameters obtained from ground-water samples.

Oil exploration in Florida began around the turn of the century in Escambia County (Gunter, 1949). Many test wells were drilled from 1900 until Humble Oil and Refining Company developed Florida's first producing well (Gulf Coast Realties Corp. No. 1) in September 1943 at Sunniland. Anticipation of oil exploration in the Big Cypress area aroused concern the effects a producing field would have on the quality of surface water in the area. The Florida Department of Natural Resources requested the U.S. Geological Survey to determine whether there have been any such effects. The 29-year old Sunniland oil field was chosen for this preliminary evaluation.

- South Florida, Seeking a Balance of Man and Nature: Land, Water and Energy Use for Long Range Economic Vitality in South Florida.
- Name/Creator
-
Browder, Joan., Littlejohn, Charles., Young, Don., Center for Wetlands, Florida, United States, PALMM (Project)
- Abstract/Description
-
Florida's economy, population and resource demands have consistently expanded over the past three decades. An abundance of cheap resources allowed this rapid growth to occur. However, today resources no longer appear limitless. Fossil fuels, raw materials, land and water are in short supply. The South Florida Study attempts to present the reader with a better understanding of these regional problems, with recommendations and guidelines for future planning.

The suggested policies in this document are an attempt to articulate how the state coastal management program intends to treat various coastal zone activities and geographic areas. While many, if not most of the suggested policies are based upon existing statutory and administrative authorities, potential legal deficiencies are recognized. Upon finalization, the suggested policy statements should provide a "common language" for facilitating consistency between federal, state and local coastal...

While many, if not most of the suggested policies are based upon existing statutory and administrative authorities, potential legal deficiencies are recognized. Upon finalization, the suggested policy statements should provide a "common language" for facilitating consistency between federal, state and local coastal management efforts and satisfying requirements of the National Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972.
