A diligent attempt has also been made to restrict the listing of organisms to those which are truly pathogenic, omitting those organisms which were felt to be saprophytes or necrophytes, i.e., organisms which develop on dead plant tissue.

- Name/Creator

Simpson, Charles Torrey, Florida, PALMM (Project)
- Abstract/Description
-
The State of Florida covers a great range from north to south and is inhabited by a wide range of native plants suited to the many environmental conditions available. In addition, many plants have migrated to the state from other regions and now compete with native plants, especially in the southern part of the state which is suitable for many tropical as well as subtropical plants.

- Exotic Plant Species Management Strategies (Report 89/04).
- Name/Creator
-
Whiteaker, Louis D., Doren, Robert F.
- Abstract/Description
-
The unique vegetation and flora of southern Florida have fascinated scientists and naturalists since their discovery, and were a primary reason for the establishment of Everglades National Park. One noteworthy feature of the south Florida flora is the rather high degree of endemism. Approximately 65 taxa are endemic to southern Florida, and about 25 of these are confined to the small area of slash pine forest in southeastern Florida.

Alexander, Taylor R. (Taylor Richard), Crook, Alan G., United States, University of Miami
- Abstract/Description

Vegetational change, or plant succession, is described for southern Florida. Several significant shifts in species composition within communities, as well as the replacement of communities, are recognized. These are documented for a 16 to 30-year period and include a landward increase of mangrove forests, loss of coastal hardwood hammocks, both gain and loss of everglade tree islands, replacement of sawgrass by shrubs, pine and hardwood invasion of cypress, and pineland succession to hammock....

The specific impact of farming, canals, roads, and exotic plants are also covered. These observations were made during photographic and on-site analysis of one-hundred-mile-square quadrants.

- Collection and cultivation of medicinal plants of Florida.
- Name/Creator
-
Christensen, B. V. (Bernard Victor), University of Florida, Florida, PALMM (Project)
- Abstract/Description
-
This bulletin is designed to give the average layman enough information to enable him to collect and place on the market a good quality of plant material for medicinal uses. Methods of collecting and curing of medicinal plants and the marketing of the products they yield are discussed. The range and habitats of specific plants along with detailed botanical descriptions are aimed at assisting in collection and curing efforts. Cultivation of other plants is also suggested.

- Dwarf Essex rape as a winter forage in Florida.
- Name/Creator
-
Scott, John M. (John Marcus), University of Florida
- Abstract/Description
-
One of Florida's greatest needs in livestock production is more acres of winter pasture. Rape, either as a winter pasture or forage crop, seems to answer this need. Dwarf Essex rape, the most satisfactory variety of rape for Florida's climatic conditions will produce tons of nutritional feed per acre at a time of year when green feeds are scarce.

Show moreSouth Florida has a remarkable flora, quite distinctive within the United States for its strong tropical affinities. A large number of West Indian species occur in the United States only here, and a considerable number of plant species are endemic to South Florida. Major modifications have occurred and are occurring in South Florida ecosystems and some species have already been extirpated. A large portion of the southern tip of Florida and its islands is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. National Park Service- Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, Biscayne National Monument, and Fort Jefferson National Monument. Even these areas have been significantly modified from pristine ecological conditions and parts of the areas are currently subjected to active manipulation (prescribed burning, control of exotic plants, scheduled water releases) designed to preserve ecosystems in as natural a condition as possible.
