The purpose of this investigation is to document the types of aquatic benthic organisms found within the Everglades and to determine the extent to which the chemical and physical character of surface water and bottom materials affect their distribution and community structure. The scope of this investigation included the collection of benthic organisms from October 1972 to April 1974. The scope of this investigation included the collection of benthic organisms from October 1972 to April 1974. Two samplings were completed during the dry season (April 1973-74) and two during the wet season (October 1972-73). Of the 12 stations sampled, 10 were canals and 2 were in the open marsh. Comparison of species diversities calculated from similar investigations done in south Florida in recent years is made.

[1]., "On the basis of the first year of data collection, there were no detectable environmental perturbations resulting from the current level of usage of the training runway. ... Although not related directly to the training flights, the monitoring activities did reveal some of the influence of man's activities in the aquatic environments studied. These influences included pesticides ... , water contamination by metals associated with construction activities at the jetport and water contamination with lead in areas of heavy vehicular traffic (outboard motors and automobiles)"--P. [1]-2.

The report summarizes an investigation into the causes and repercussions of an unprecedented die-back of seagrass in Florida Bay. Morphometric characteristics of the affected grass beds are presented. Unusual growth characteristics were observed in the affected areas. It is suggested that cytotoxic levels of sediment sulfides may have contributed to synergistic role. It was observed that Halodula may outstrip Thalassia in the recovery process. Labyrinthula, a lime mold, has been associated...

Labyrinthula, a lime mold, has been associated with the die back. A conceptual model suggests that environmental stress and the pathogenic slime mold acted together to cause mortality.

Man has engaged in cultural activities, both agricultural and urban, which have affected the water quality in the northern and eastern segments of the area of investigation. The quality of the water improves, however, as it flows to the south and east because there is minimal input from man's activities and many of the constituents are assimilated by plants, sorbed on organic material and clay in the bottom sediments, and entrapped within the sediments. Because of these processes, the water entering Everglades National Park is of better quality than that entering the conservation areas in the north"--P. 8.
