In June 1988, the Florida Geological Survey and the South Florida Water Management District entered into a contract to conduct a joint project in Lee, Hendry and Collier counties. The objectives of this project were to increase the geologic/hydrogeologic well data available in these counties, to translate existing lithologic descriptions of wells within the district to computer format and to add this data to the District computer data base. The objectives of this project were to increase the geologic/hydrogeologic well data available in these counties, to translate existing lithologic descriptions of wells within the district to computer format and to add this data to the District computer data base. These objectives were met by the translation of over 180 existing well logs to computer format, by drilling and evaluating the data for six cores, and merging all of this data with the existing FGS and District computer data bases.

During the time that the desalination plant has been in operation, questions have been raised by water-management agencies concerning the ability of the deep artesian aquifers underlying Sanibel and Captiva Islands to continue supplying the water needed to meet the increasing demand with a salinity low enough for the desalination plant to operate effectively. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the water-supply potential of the deeper aquifers. During the 24-month investigation ...

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the water-supply potential of the deeper aquifers. During the 24-month investigation (October 1975-1977) an important objective was to locate and inventory all existing wells that tapped the deep artesian aquifers. Except for a few, all known wells were found. Water levels and water samples were obtained at the wells. No test wells were drilled as part of this investigation, although one observation well was drilled on Sanibel Island as part of a countywide monitoring network.

- The Effects of Plugging a Deep Artesian Well on the Concentration of Chloride in Water in the Water-Table Aquifer at Highland Estates, Lee County, Florida.

Upward leakage of saline water from deep artesian wells has caused widespread deterioration in quality of water in the shallow artesian aquifers underlying Lee County, Florida. The water-table aquifer has been affected similarly when saline water from the deep artesian wells has been allowed to discharge at the surface, or when corroded well casings have developed leaks at shallow depth. A program is underway (1972) in Lee County and adjacent areas to minimize or eliminate these problems by...
Show moreUpward leakage of saline water from deep artesian wells has caused widespread deterioration in quality of water in the shallow artesian aquifers underlying Lee County, Florida. The water-table aquifer has been affected similarly when saline water from the deep artesian wells has been allowed to discharge at the surface, or when corroded well casings have developed leaks at shallow depth. A program is underway (1972) in Lee County and adjacent areas to minimize or eliminate these problems by plugging deep artesian wells. Although a large number of wells has been plugged in Lee County as well as in other areas, little documentation has been obtained concerning the residual effects on quality of the water in the intruded aquifers after elimination of the discharge or leakage. The purpose of this report is to present the results of an investigation wherein the quality of water in the water-table aquifer improved after a deep artesian well was plugged.

- Fluctuations of Ground-water Levels in Lee County, Florida, in 1974.
- Name/Creator
-
Missimer, T. M., O'Donnell, T. H., O'Donnell, T. H., Fort Myers (Fla.), Lee County (Fla.), Geological Survey (U.S.)
- Abstract/Description
-
This is the first in a series of annual reports presenting water-level data from selected observation wells in Lee County, Florida. It includes data collected during water year 1974. Long-term hydrographs of wells continuously monitored by recorders are plotted using month-end high water levels. Effects of climatic conditions and human activities on ground-water levels are briefly described.

- Fluctuations of Ground-Water Levels in Lee County, Florida, in 1975 Water Year.
- Name/Creator
-
O'Donnell, T. H., Sanibel (Fla.), Lee County (Fla.), Geological Survey (U.S.)
- Abstract/Description

This report summarizes water-level data collected from 57 observation wells and rainfall data collected from 3 stations in Lee County, Florida, during water year 1975. Data from observation wells that are measured periodically are presented on month-end, water-year hydrographs. Data from wells that are equipped with continuous water-level recorders are presented on daily-high, water-year hydrographs. Historical water-level data are included for comparison.

This report summarizes water-level data collected from 75 observation wells and rainfall data collected from 3 stations in Lee County, Florida, during water year 1976. The water-level data are measured monthly and presented on month-end, water-year hydrographs. Water-level data from wells that are equipped with continuous recorders are presented on daily-high, water-year hydrographs. Historical water-level data are included for comparison.

- Name/Creator
-
Boggess, Durward H., Missimer, T. M., O'Donnell, T., Geological Survey (U.S.), Board of County Commissioners of Lee County (Fla.)
- Abstract/Description

This report is intended to identify many of the causes of saline-water intrusion into freshwater aquifers in Lee County, Florida, and to describe some of the effects of the intrusion on ground-water quality. Particular emphasis is placed on saline-water intrusion as related to the construction, operation, and maintenance of wells drilled primarily for water-supply, and to the plugging of wells that are no longer used.
