Two years later Glover Allen (1942:544) included the Florida manatee in his EXTINCTT AND VANISHING MAMMALS OF THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE, and Gordon Gunter (1942:89) wrote: "For years it has been a matter of common knowledge with conservationists and mammalogists that manatees are very uncommon in the United States." Many have shared their concern, and many have looked forward to the recent establishment of the Everglades National Park with the hope that it should provide for the indefinite survival of this interesting creature.It seems fitting, therefore, that this early opportunity to be taken to report on the apparent status of the manatee in this park, and to record such information on its natural history as it at hand. A total of 55 hydrographic studies were conducted dating from 1879 to the present,varying in duration from less than 1 year to over 5 years., Twenty-three studies were conducted in Florida Bay; 17 in the Everglades estuary; 16 in southern Biscayne Bay; 14 in Card-Barnes Sound; 7 in the Big Cypress estuary; and 5 in the area of the northern coral reef tract. A summary of the water quality parameters minimum and maximum are discussed. The greatest variations in salinity, temperature, DO, pH, and turbidity occurred in Florida Bay.

Abstract/Description: During 1991 we began a study of survival and dispersal of snail kites (Rostrhamus sociabilis) throughout Florida. The intent of this study was to better estimate parameters associated with demography and movement of kites and to assess the environmental influences on these parameters. This report provides a summarization of progress and data for the first year of the study. In-depth analyses and conclusions are premature at this early stage of our research.

Title: Logging in Big Cypress.

Abstract/Description: Small scale lumbering in the Big Cypress began around 1900 with small sawmills at Everglades, Naples, and Immokalee. By 1930, eight small mills were operating within 32 km (20 mi) of Immokalee (Tebeau, 1966). In the mid-to late 1930s operations expanded. The peak lumbering period was from the 1940s through the mid-1950s. By the end of this time most of the large South Florida slash pine Pinus Elliottii var. densa and cypress Taxodium distichum had been removed.
