- Habitat Suitability Index Models: hard clam.
- Name/Creator
-
Mulholland, Rosemarie., National Coastal Ecosystems Team (U.S.)
- Abstract/Description
-
A review and synthesis of existing information were used to develop a model for evaluating estuarine habitat for the hard clam. The model is scaled to produce an index of habitat suitability between 0 (unsuitable habitat) and 1 (optimum habitat) for the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. Habitat suitability indices are designed for use with the Habitat Evaluation Procedures previously developed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Show moreHabitat Suitability Index (SI) curves are one method of presenting species habitat suitability criteria. The curves are often used with the Habitat Evaluation Procedures (HEP) and are necessary components of the Instream Flow Incremental Methodology (IFIM). The Delphi technique is one method used for combining the knowledge and opinions of a group of experts. The primary characteristic of Delphi is anonymity; correspondence is the communication mode usually used. The concept is based on the premise that opinions of experts are justified as input to decisionmaking where absolute answers are unknown, and a consensus of experts will provide a more accurate response to a question than a single expert. The purpose of this report is to describe how the Delphi technique may be used to develop expert-opinion-based SI curves.

Show moreThe framework of a national land use and land cover classification system is presented for use with remote sensor data. The classification system has been developed to meet the needs of federal and state agencies for an up-to-date overview of land use and land cover throughout the country on a basis that is uniform in categorization at the more generalized first and second levels and that will be receptive to data from satellite and aircraft remote sensors. The proposed system uses the features of existing widely used classification systems that are ameanble to data derived from remote sensing sources. It is intentionally left open-ended so that federal, regional, state, and local agencies can have flexibility in developing more detailed land use classifications at the third and fourth levels in order to meet their particular needs and at the same timne remain compatible with each other and the national system. Revision of the land use classification system as presented in U.S. Geological Survey Circular 671 was undertaken in order to incorporate the results of extensive testing and review of the categorization and definitions.

The Australian leaf-mining fly, Hydreillia balciunasi, was first released as a biological control agent for the management of the submersed aquatic plant, Hydrilla verticillata, in August 1989. Since then, the release program has resulted in the introduction of nearly 300,000 H. balciunasi in two states and 11 locations. Despite repeated attempts, it is established permanently at just one, and possibly two, Texas locations, where populations have remained low. This suggests that H. balciunasi...

Florida
- Abstract/Description
-
Since 1975, coastal pollutant spills in Florida have been handled with a minimum of damage and procedural problems. This report pulls together many recommendations for improvement, some already funded and implemented and many still under review by the Congress, industry, federal agencies, state and local agencies, as well as nonprofit organizations and private enterprise in general.

- A National policy of "no net loss" of wetlands: what do agricultural economists have to contribute?.
- Name/Creator
-
Heimlich, Ralph E., United States
- Abstract/Description
-
President Bush proposed "no net loss" as a national goal, meaning that restoring wetlands must complement conserving wetlands to offset unavoidable losses. This symposium explored how "no net loss" might operate and the economist's role in developing this policy. Wetland policy evolution, costs of acquiring public rights to wetlands, valuing wetland benefits, and alternatives to existing institutional mechanisms for controlling wetland loss were discussed.

Literature about the impacts of navigational dredging on fish, other aquatic biota, and wildlife is reviewed. Also included are types of dredging equipment, characteristics of dredged material, evaluation of dredged material pollution potential, and habitat development and enhancement opportunities arising from dredged material disposal. The review contains a brief discussion of the state of knowledge and refers the reader to pertinent literature for additional information. The discussions about impacts and habitat development are divided into "Coastal Waters" (including disposal in estuarine, continental shelf, and deep ocean waters) and "Rivers". A limited dscussion of the "Great Lakes" is included as an appendix.
